Importancia de una Comunicación Eficiente en Tiempos de Pandemia

La idea de consolidar el Capítulo Nacional de la OWSD para Guatemala se materializó en el mes de febrero de este 2020, cuando apenas éramos 23 mujeres guatemaltecas inscritas (algunas de ellas con membresías inactivas). El primer paso era crecer, por lo que empezamos a divulgar la iniciativa a través de redes sociales y también con personas parte de nuestros círculos profesionales y sociales. El proceso despertó mucho interés porque se convertía en una posibilidad seria y concreta de vincularnos como comunidad científica de mujeres con la producción de conocimiento como objetivo fundamental para transformar positivamente la realidad de nuestro país. El crecimiento en número de membresías fue significativo y para esto fue determinante establecer mecanismos de comunicación clara y eficiente.

Una vez observamos este aumento en el número de membresías, enviamos el paquete de solicitud para consolidar el capítulo a la Secretaría de la OWSD incluyendo el formulario completo de solicitud, así como el detalle de las miembros que formarían parte del Comité Ejecutivo. Las posiciones de liderazgo para establecer el Capítulo Nacional incluían Presidencia, Vicepresidencia, Secretaría y Tesorería. También reconocimos la relevancia de establecer una posición responsable de comunicar tanto a las miembros del Capítulo como actores del sistema de ciencia y tecnología de Guatemala y la sociedad guatemalteca sobre la iniciativa, por lo que asumí el desafío de coordinar la comunicación y divulgación del capítulo nacional. El equipo se conformó finalmente con siete personas, que desde la fecha de la aprobación oficial de nuestro capítulo trabajos de manera voluntaria en la planificación e implementación de actividades para alcanzar los objetivos de la OWSD. Mientras en febrero éramos 23 como indiqué anteriormente, al día de hoy (junio 18, 2020) hemos superado las 200 membresías activas. La situación que enfrenta la humanidad debido a la pandemia de la COVID 19 ha requerido de una estrategia de comunicación asertiva y el uso de todas las herramientas disponibles sin costo a nuestro alcance. Actualmente el Capítulo Nacional OWSD Guatemala cuenta con un equipo de comunicación de diez miembros (8 titulares y 2 afiliadas) que junto a mi persona dinamizan la comunicación a través de nuestra dirección de correo electrónico, así como las redes sociales, incluyendo Facebook (1164 seguidores), Twitter (339), Instagram (229), Youtube (29) y LinkedIn (73). Siendo el Capítulo Nacional más numeroso en membresías activas de la OWSD en toda la región latinoamericana y del Caribe (201), queremos compartir nuestra experiencia y disponer nuestro apoyo y asistencia al resto de países en proceso de establecimiento de sus Capítulos Nacionales. ¡Celebramos lo logrado durante estos tres meses de confinamiento y en medio de una pandemia! Cada día más mujeres brillantes se continúan sumado, esto nos compromete a fortalecer más liderazgos para continuar la labor.

The Importance of Efficient Communication in the Time of a Pandemic

The establishment of the OWSD National Chapter for Guatemala became a possibility in February 2020, although by then we were just 23 registered Guatemalan women (some of them with inactive memberships). The first step was to increase the number of memberships, so we began to spread the initiative through social networks and also with people from our professional and social circles. The process aroused great interest because it became a serious and concrete possibility of linking us as a scientific community of women with the production of knowledge as a fundamental objective to positively transform the reality of our country. The growth in the number of memberships was significant and for this it was decisive to establish clear and efficient communication mechanisms.

Once we observed this organic growth, we sent the application package to consolidate the chapter to the OWSD Secretariat, including the complete application form, as well as the details of the members who would be part of the Executive Committee. The leadership positions to establish the National Chapter included the Chair, Vice-Chair, Secretariat and Treasury. We also recognized the relevance of establishing a position responsible of communications, both towards the members of the Chapter and towards actors of the Guatemalan science and technology system, as well as the wider Guatemalan society. At that moment I assumed such challenge coordinating the communication and dissemination of activities on behalf of our National Chapter. The Executive Committee is formed by seven members, who since the date of the official approval of our chapter have worked in the planning and implementation of activities to achieve the objectives of the OWSD. While in February we were 23 as I indicated previously, today (June 18, 2020) we have surpassed 200 active memberships. The daring situation faced by the entire humanity due to the COVID 19 pandemic has required an assertive communication strategy and the use of all available tools at no cost within our reach. Currently the OWSD Guatemala National Chapter has built up an entire Communication team formed by ten members (8 Full Members and 2 Affiliate Members) who, along with myself carry on the communication strategy of the Chapter with involve handling communications via email address, as well as various social networks, including Facebook (1164 followers), Twitter (339 contacts), Instagram (229), Youtube (29) and LinkedIn (73). Guatemala became the most numerous among the Latin American National Chapter which motivates us to share our experience and make available our support and assistance to fellow women scientists and researchers in the process of establishing their National Chapters. We celebrate what has been achieved during these three months of confinement and in the midst of a pandemic! Every day more brilliant women continue to join, this commits us to nurture more leaders to continue the work.
