Identifying AMPK as a potential target of synthetic chalco-naringenin analogs and putative therapeutic applications.
Publications resulting from Research:
‘Nyane NA, Tlaila TB, Malefane TG, Ndwandwe DE, Owira PMO. Metformin-like antidiabetic, cardio-protective and non-glycemic effects of naringenin: Molecular and pharmacological insights. Eur J Pharmacol. 2017 May 15; 803:103-111
Current profession
Current professional activities type:ResearchDoing research on Naringenin, a flavonoid which exerts its antidiabetic effects by inhibition of gluconeogenesis through upregulation of AMPK, hence metformin-like effects. Because of these similar pharmacological effects between naringenin and metformin, our laboratory synthesized analogs of chlaco-naringenin compounds which could be more permeable to the plasma membrane and hence putatively increased pharmacological effects
